We all know this iconic card brand and the years they've spent publishing designs and illustrations by famous and lesser-known artists, especially for those less familiar with the community. has always had a unique style, but recently, they've released some truly alternative designs—not to mention the incredible community of creators and card creation platforms... I couldn’t stay behind!
Toque Rúnico (Runic Touch)
I’d wanted to make Magic cards ever since Ricardo Cavolo released a collection for the brand. Recently, I watched a series where one of the characters was cursed with a runic spell, which inspired me further. For this design, I based it on a photo I took of some Kanji seals I saw at a vintage market—I almost bought them to use in the design but ended up just taking the picture. The result turned out well, and I refined the concept to make it more sophisticated, calling it Runic Touch and showing a hand casting the curse, even though the original idea was directly depicting the cursed character.
The card is an instant spell, and it reads: Destroy the target creature, then place a "Runic Curse" counter on another creature controlled by the same player. While it has this counter, that creature gets -1/-1 at the beginning of each upkeep.
"The secrets carved in runes bring to power... and misfortune to those who misuse them"
Aliento de Draco (Dragon's Breath)
I was inspired by this card by an Asian-style metal box I bought at a market. I needed something like it to store my charcoal, and when I started this project, I thought, "I have to use it" because it's just stunning. I wanted to capture a dragon’s final breath to make this card a dual element of my two favourite decks—fire and death.
This card is an aura enchantment and reads: Enchanted creature gets +2/+0 and gains "Death-touch". Additionally, at the beginning of your upkeep, Dragon's Breath deals 1 damage to each opposing creature. If the enchanted creature is a Dragon, this damage increases by 3.
"The final breath of a dragon leaves no survivors, only ashes."
Azulejo Elemental (Elemental Tile)
’m obsessed with tiles, mosaics, pavers—anything ceramic related to space design. I found a cool book on tiles that inspired me for this card. I wanted it to be powerful and adaptable to all types of decks, so I thought about land cards—without them, the game wouldn’t make sense. How could I blend all lands into a single card with a basic element? A tile. We find them on roads, in temples, in ruins, and anywhere humanity has left its mark. They’re beautiful and tell stories, making them the perfect element. I used pentagonal shapes to position all the elements and went with a deep blue palette, as it felt the most fitting.
The card is a legendary artifact and reads: At the beginning of each upkeep, create a basic land of the most common type in your deck. Elemental Imbalance: Your opponents' lands produce colourless mana and lose all abilities until the end of the turn.
Essence Dominance: At the beginning of your combat, turn all your lands into a land type you control until the end of your turn.
It had been a long time since I’d had this much fun designing—connecting with my childhood, with the aspirations of that kid I was, and blending it all into creations that I enjoy, that help me shape my style and skills. It’s a privilege we often deny ourselves out of fear of others' opinions and feedback, holding back our creativity and instincts. You should never stop dreaming or chasing what you want; you never know where opportunities might be!
